Former state senator Don Huffines won the race for the Republican nomination for comptroller.
He secured more than 50 percent of the vote, beating out Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock, Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick, and accountant Michael Berlanga in the four-way race.
Huffines is a real estate developer in North Texas, former state senator, 2022 candidate for governor, and founder of the Huffines Liberty Foundation. He campaigned on his DOGE Texas Agenda, which identified several key issues he plans to tackle as comptroller to root out inefficiency and corruption and audit the state more effectively.
“This decisive win demonstrates that Texas voters resonate with our consistent campaign message to DOGE Texas government, deliver a truly independent oversight of all spending and government contracting, and bring a private sector mentality to Texas government,” Huffines stated. “I look forward to expanding our campaign beyond the Republican Primary electorate and taking our bipartisan message of DOGE-ing government to voters.”
Hancock, then a state senator, took over as acting comptroller in the summer of 2025 after previous Comptroller Glenn Hegar resigned to become Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. Hancock ran on his record in the state senate, where he has attempted to cap constitutional spending.
Craddick ran on her decade of experience leading the Railroad Commission, highlighting multiple regulatory cuts she initiated to remove unnecessary costs.
Huffines will face Democrat nominee Sarah Eckhardt in the November 2026 General Election.
