State Rep. Dustin Burrows, who is currently attempting to execute a Democrat-powered bid for speaker of the House, may have some trouble at home.
A new poll commissioned by Texans United for a Conservative Majority shows Burrows (R–Lubbock) is underwater with Republican voters in his district. Only 31 percent of likely Republican primary voters approve of Burrows, compared to 37 percent who disapprove.
Fifty-seven percent say they would vote for a conservative alternative to Burrows after learning about his plan to use Democrats to gain the speakership despite losing the Republican nomination last month.
Currently, more Democrat lawmakers are supporting Burrows than Republicans, who have instead rallied around State Rep. David Cook (R–Mansfield) as their nominee.
“The data is clear. Conservative voters don’t appreciate Burrows attempting to circumvent the House Republican Caucus and disapprove of his running to House Democrats for support,” said Chad Shoemake, treasurer of Texans United for a Conservative Majority. “The average Republican voter is really waking up to the importance of a Republican speaker elected by Republicans. We challenge Dustin Burrows’ team to produce a poll showing different numbers. We aren’t holding our breath.”
The poll was conducted by Ascend. The results are available here.
