Over the weekend, Fox News personality Maria Bartiromo set off a firestorm, posting to X that immigrants were being registered to vote in Parker County, Texas.

Her post relayed how a friend had visited a DMV in Weatherford, Texas, where a line of immigrants—who were getting licenses and being registered to vote at a table outside the office—was out the door. Notably, only the Department of Public Safety grants driver’s licenses, not the Department of Motor Vehicles.

It’s also important to note the post did not assert that the individuals applying for driver’s licenses were illegal aliens, merely immigrants. Legal resident immigrants are allowed to apply for licenses in the state of Texas, but they are not allowed to register to vote.

The post further alleged that the same fact pattern was established in two separate locations in Fort Worth, where immigrants were lined up out the door and Democrat organizations were out front registering purported immigrants to vote.

Replies to the post, including some with images, appear to suggest that non-profits with links to progressive groups are soliciting voter registrations outside of government buildings.

Weatherford is a city within Parker County, and Brady Gray, chairman of the county GOP, investigated Bartiromo’s claims. Gray had multiple conversations with both county election and DPS officials to establish the veracity of the claims but discovered that things in the county weren’t outside of the normal standard.

According to Gray, there hasn’t been a surge in voter registration. No recent voter registrations are out of compliance with state law, including citizenship verification, of which there have only been two such cases in the past 15 years in Parker County.

Additionally, Gray confirmed that no tents or tables have registered voters on DPS grounds and that if there were, individuals manning these locations “would be told to leave, as it is not allowed.“

Texans in 2024 have a heightened sensitivity to claims of election manipulation and nefarious activity after the 2020 election, which was, according to TIME Magazine, “fortified” to secure a desired outcome.

In a follow-up post, Gray noted that while voters are not being registered to vote outside of DPS locations in Parker County, that may not be the case across the entire state.
