Republican precinct chairs in State Rep. Lacey Hull’s Houston district are taking her to task, urging her to support the Republican nominee David Cook for speaker of the House.

Currently, Hull is the only Republican House member in Harris County supporting State Rep. Dustin Burrows for the position despite him losing the Republican nomination last month.

The resolution, which the organizers plan to deliver to Hull’s Austin office personally, states:

Lacey Hull is violating Plank 213 of the 2024 Republican Party of Texas Platform by not supporting David Cook for House Speaker; Lacey Hull is the only Republican Texas House Representative in Harris County who is not supporting David Cook for House Speaker; [and] Lacey Hull is siding with Democrats by supporting Dustin Burrows for House Speaker.

The precinct chairs warn that if Burrows secures the speakership with Democrat support and a minority of House Republicans, it would mirror the leadership of outgoing Speaker Dade Phelan Legislature under Dade Phelan. The resolution emphasizes:

If Dustin Burrows is elected House Speaker with the votes of the House Democrats and a minority of House Republicans, which presently includes Lacey Hull, the 89th Texas Legislature would be reminiscent of the 88th Texas Legislature and Dade Phelan’s speakership, which resulted in the legislative priorities of the Republican Party of Texas being blocked by Democrat Committee Chairs appointed by former Speaker Phelan.

The resolution concludes with a clear demand for Hull to align with party principles:

BE IT RESOLVED that Texas House District 138 Harris County Precinct Chairmen signing below condemn this violation by Lacey Hull of Plank 213 of the 2024 Republican Party of Texas Platform and demand that Lacey Hull comply with Plank 213 of the 2024 Republican Party of Texas Platform and support David Cook for Texas House Speaker.

The resolution was signed by over two dozen precinct chairs, comprising 79 percent of the precinct chairs in her district.

Hull did not respond to a request for comment.

The vote for speaker will take place on Tuesday, January 14, after the House gavels in at noon.
