Republican State Reps. Briscoe Cain of Deer Park and Brian Harrison of Midlothian are calling on the Texas Medical Board to terminate one of its top employees after it was revealed that he also works for Planned Parenthood.
On Monday, it was revealed that TMB’s Medical Director, Dr. Robert Bredt, has worked for Planned Parenthood of South Texas since 2011, where he oversees the operation and administration of the laboratory. Bredt joined TMB in 2012 and is currently paid $185,000 annually by taxpayers.
Following the news, Cain is now urging the TMB to terminate Bredt’s employment immediately.
“Texans expect the Texas Medical Board to uphold the highest standards of ethics and impartiality,” said Cain. “The fact an individual responsible for regulating the practice of medicine in Texas also works for Planned Parenthood—a criminal organization that profits from murdering babies—stands in direct conflict with the laws of our nation and our state’s pro-life values. This is unacceptable. He must be fired.”
Harrison has written to the governor, asking that his office work with TMB to “immediately remove this individual.”
Cain explains that due to Bredt’s leadership position with an organization that “violates federal statutes that outlaw the shipment and receipt of abortion drugs and abortion-related paraphernalia,” the board should terminate him to “preserve its credibility and the public’s trust.”
“Having someone with a leadership role at a criminal organization such as Planned Parenthood simultaneously serving in a prominent regulatory position erodes public trust and creates an undeniable conflict of interest. Anyone associated with Planned Parenthood has no place overseeing the medical profession in the Lone Star State,” Cain continued.
Harrison compared the situation to allowing a fox to guard the henhouse.
Cain said the integrity of TMB rests on ensuring its leadership upholds the laws and values of Texas.
“I am calling on the Medical Board to terminate Dr. Robert Bredt’s employment immediately,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Harrison is asking the governor to direct all state agencies to “ensure there are no other Planned Parenthood officials employed by any state agency, including in advisory roles.”
TMB members are appointed by the Texas governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate for six-year terms. The board convenes five times a year to interview licensure candidates, consider disciplinary matters, and adopt procedural rules.
While Bredt’s position is not a gubernatorial appointment, his employment is overseen by the governor’s appointees.
