U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has officially endorsed Don Huffines in the 2026 race for Texas comptroller, adding to a growing list of conservative backers lining up behind the former state senator.
In a video announcement, Cruz praised Huffines as “a dedicated community leader, an incredibly successful businessman, and a tireless advocate for the fiscal conservative values that Texas stands for.”
“Don is committed to bringing DOGE to Texas to ensure transparency and accountability, and to root out the waste and corruption that has plagued government for far too long,” Cruz added. “Don’s unwavering commitment to returning money to the hardworking people of Texas is exactly what we need in this critical role.”
The endorsement comes as the comptroller’s office prepares for a change in leadership.
Current Comptroller Glenn Hegar was recently named the sole finalist to become chancellor of the Texas A&M University System and is expected to step down later this year. His departure has opened the door for a competitive Republican primary in 2026.
Huffines’ opponent is longtime Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick, who also announced her candidacy shortly after Hegar’s new role was announced. While Craddick has yet to release a list of endorsements, Huffines has already racked up support from a number of high-profile conservatives.
In addition to Cruz, Huffines has been endorsed by Texas Right to Life, the Texas Family Project, and the Texas Eagle Forum. Other notable backers include Vivek Ramaswamy, former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill, “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, and others.
The campaign says its focus is on mobilizing grassroots conservatives and promoting Huffines’ plan to bring the “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, to the comptroller’s office.
“I have no doubt that Don will bring real change with DOGE to the comptroller’s office,” Cruz said, “and you can count on Don Huffines to fight for you.”
The Republican primary election is likely to take place on March 3, 2026.
