The Texas A&M System Board of Regents has named Comptroller Glenn Hegar as the sole finalist for system chancellor to replace retiring Chancellor John Sharp.
Sharp had previously announced he would step down as chancellor on June 30 after almost 14 years in the position.
There is a required 21-day waiting period after the regents name Hegar as the sole finalist before they can confirm his appointment.
“The Board is confident that Glenn Hegar is ready to usher in the next era of excellence at The Texas A&M University System,” said Bill Mahomes, chairman of the Board of Regents. “Hegar grasps the unique breadth and depth of the System’s impact on every corner of Texas through its eight state agencies and 11 universities. We, as members of the Board of Regents, are eager to see what he will accomplish.”
A graduate of Texas A&M, class of ’93, Hegar currently serves as the Republican Comptroller for the State of Texas, having previously served in the Texas House of Representatives.
Sharp also served as comptroller for the state, the last Democrat to hold the office. It is unclear when Hegar would step down as comptroller. Once Hegar steps down, the governor will appoint someone to fill the seat until the term expires in 2026.
Shortly after the A&M announcement was made, Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick (R) issued a press release declaring her GOP candidacy for the 2026 comptroller seat.
Former State Sen. Don Huffines (R) has also announced his candidacy for comptroller in 2026.
