In a unanimous vote Friday, the Texas A&M University System board of regents confirmed Comptroller Glenn Hegar as its next chancellor.

The regents had named Hegar as the sole finalist on March 7, which triggered a required 21-day waiting period before they could confirm his appointment.

“I am grateful and honored that the Board of Regents have entrusted me with the responsibility of leading one of the greatest university systems in the nation,” Hegar posted after the announcement. A 1993 graduate of Texas A&M, Hegar currently serves as the Republican Comptroller for the State of Texas. Before then, he served in the Texas House of Representatives.

Current chancellor John Sharp will retire June 30, and Hegar will step into the role. Like Hegar, Sharp was state comptroller; however, he was the last Democrat elected to that office.

It is unclear when Hegar will step down as comptroller. “The timing for the Comptroller’s transition has not been finalized yet,” a spokesman for the comptroller’s office told Texas Scorecard.

When Hegar does step down, Gov. Greg Abbott will appoint someone to fill the seat until the term expires in 2026.

Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick (R) and former State Sen. Don Huffines (R) have announced their candidacies for comptroller in 2026.
