Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has signed the deed taking ownership of the Alamo Cenotaph.

The Cenotaph, located outside of the structure, became the center of controversy when former Land Commissioner George P. Bush unveiled plans to reimagine the Alamo, which included relocating the Cenotaph.

The Cenotaph, which means empty tomb, is a memorial honoring those who defended the Alamo. It also marks the Texas Centennial.

Plans to move it prompted outrage from citizens and elected officials.

Once elected as Land Commissioner, Buckingham made well on her promise to restore and preserve the Alamo instead of “reimagining” it. Buckingham advocated for the Alamo Plan—a $400 million project to construct an Alamo Visitor Center & Museum and preserve the Alamo Plaza, Alamo church, and Cenotaph.

Gov. Greg Abbott signed the Alamo Plan into law in June of 2023.

Alamo Plan funds will go towards preserving the limestone foundation and stone walls of the Alamo church, making the surrounding streets into landscaped pedestrian spaces, and constructing the Alamo Visitor Center & Museum.

“Around the globe, the Alamo stands as a symbol of bravery and utmost sacrifice,” stated Buckingham in a press release. “I have always been committed to preserving and protecting the Shrine of Texas Liberty for future generations. Safeguarding this historical landmark is critically important to ensuring Texas’ rich history is properly honored, as well as shared with our schoolchildren and the millions of people who visit every year.”

Commissioner Buckingham visited the Construction Kickoff of the Alamo Visitor Center in October and officially signed the ownership deed during her trip, GLO spokesperson Kimberly Hubbard told Texas Scorecard.

“The Alamo Cenotaph, also known as the Spirit of Sacrifice, stands as a reminder of the brave defenders who refused to surrender and sacrifice all for freedom,” said Buckingham. “I am proud to have delivered this significant victory for all Texans who cherish our rich history. Just like my days in the Texas Senate when I threw down the legal challenge to keep the Cenotaph in its place, GLO ownership will forever ensure that this celebrated symbol of valor will be dutifully preserved, will always stand tall, and will never be moved.”
