A Temple man is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student while working as a high school security guard.
Jaylin Kane Bryant, 26, was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child, the legal term in Texas for rape of a victim under the age of 17. The offense is a second-degree felony punishable by 2 to 20 years in prison.
According to a report by KWTX, the Temple Police Department began investigating in January, when the student’s mother found sexual messages on her daughter’s phone between the girl and Bryant.
The girl reportedly told an investigator at the Children’s Advocacy Center that she met Bryant during her freshman year of high school. She said she had physical contact with the security guard, including sexual intercourse, while she was 16 years old. The legal age of consent in Texas is 17.
Bryant was arrested by the Temple Police Department and booked into the Bell County Jail on April 15. Bond is set at $85,000.
Texas Scorecard has requested additional information from the Temple Police, including the school where Bryant worked at the time of the alleged offense.
Over the past few years, a growing number of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other minors, and thousands have been reported to the Texas Education Agency for sexual misconduct.
