First-year Denton boys’ track-and-field coach Keiston Alexander said his team of five seniors and two upperclassmen bring “depth and versatility” to the field.

Denton is led by senior sprinters Corbin Shelly (100, 200, 400 and  three relay teams), Connor Roche (100 and 200), Monty Williams (110 and  300 high hurdles), Ty Mongo (100, 200 and 400) and Elijah Thibodeaux (200, three relays).

Underclassmen Conner Shelly (relays), Corbin’s brother, and Xylohn Posey (100 and 200) also figure prominently for the Broncos.

“We’ve got a good mix of seniors and freshmen and sophomores, some experienced track guys and some raw talent, but the thing is they’re all  buying in,” Alexander added. “We feel like we have a few guys that have a real solid chance to make it to the state tournament in Austin. As a team, we feel like we can compete for district and area titles if enough things go right.”

Alexander shares an unwavering philosophy with his team that has instantly aided them in bonding.

“Our philosophy is track is an individual sport with a team emphasis,” Alexander told the Texas Scorecard. “What that means and what we all agree to as a team is to work for one another. We know that the stopwatch and the tape measure don’t lie and the work you put in will always show itself. That’s why my guys are always working.”

The coach is hopeful it will all end in a season to remember for the Broncos, but realizes it is all about staying the course for the Broncos, who also regularly talk about trusting the process.

“We can’t allow ourselves to become complacent when we have whatever early success we experience nor can we get too frustrated about any stumbles,” Alexander said. “Our thing is we want to be peaking in April when state rolls around.”
