A known political ally of far-left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is backing a number of local, county, and congressional candidates in Texas this year.
The Working Families Party, a far-left political organization based in New York that is allied with AOC, is targeting both local and federal elections.
In their “People’s Charter”—praised by AOC and Congresswomen Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who are known collectively as “the squad”—WFP supports defunding the police as Dallas far-left activists have defined it: raiding taxpayer dollars from police budgets to grow government elsewhere.
The organization also supports ending the oil industry, keeping schools closed, socialized healthcare, hiking taxes, and other far-left priorities.
The Working Families Party has targeted Texas, pushing a number of candidates statewide.
City Council
In city council races, WFP has endorsed all incumbents: Austin City Councilman Greg Casar, DeSoto City Councilwoman Kay Brown-Patrick, Denton City Councilwoman Deb Armintor, El Paso City Councilwoman Alexsandra Anello, and McKinney City Councilman La’Shadion Shemwell, who is facing a recall election initiated by local citizens.
School Board
In school board races, the organization is going after the Dallas Independent School District, backing newcomer Alicia McClung, who is running against Joe Carreon.
County Attorney
WFP is backing Democrats Delia Garza for Travis County Attorney and Jose Garza for Travis County District Attorney.
Sheriff
In Tarrant County, WFP is endorsing Vance Keyes, who is running against incumbent Republican Sheriff Bill Waybourn.
Texas House
WFP has endorsed Democrats Jasmine Crockett in Texas House District 100, who is running unopposed in the Dallas district, and Akilah Bacy in District 138, who is running against Republican Lacey Hull for the open Houston-area seat.
Congressional Races
WFP is backing three Democrats for Congress.
In District 10, they’re supporting Mike Siegel, who is running against incumbent Republican Michael McCaul and Libertarian Roy Eriksen.
In District 24, WFP supports Candace Valenzuela, who is facing Republican Beth Van Duyne, Libertarian Darren Hamilton, and Independents Mark Bauer and Steve Kuzmich for the open seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Kenny Marchant (R).
In District 25, WFP supports Julie Oliver, who is running against incumbent Republican Roger Williams and Libertarian Bill Kelsey.
Early voting is underway through October 30 for the November 3 election.
