A couple weeks ago we compared the scores of the House Speaker candidates on the Fiscal Responsibility Index, which describes how often lawmakers vote in the best interest of taxpayers. Another legislator has thrown his hat in the ring; State Rep. Byron Cook (R-Corsicanna) filed his paperwork to run for speaker. In the interest of fairness, we wanted to note his score: an 80% record of voting with Texas’ taxpayers.

It’s a score far better than those of the other legislators seeking to unseat incumbent House Speaker Tom Craddick (R-Midland). His score is better than the House average.
