Gov. Greg Abbott Invokes Invasion Clauses But Changes Nothing

On Tuesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced his invocation of the Invasion Clauses of the U.S. and Texas constitutions as the invasion on the Texas-Mexico border worsens, but he refused to outright declare an invasion and return illegal border-crossers to Mexico.

President Joe Biden’s open border policies have incentivized illegal border crossings, with more than 2.3 million illegal aliens crossing the southwest border this federal fiscal year.

However, neither Abbott’s letter to county judges nor his statement suggests that any illegal border-crossers arrested by the National Guard or the Texas DPS will be returned to Mexico.

The Center for Renewing America said, “While this sounds good—Governor Abbott has not invoked the full authority of an invasion declaration. Saying you’re being invaded but not blocking the invaders from coming is a hollow shell.”

Until Governor Abbott removes illegals back across the border and out of the country, this will continue to be a P.R. stunt—and Texas and the U.S. are worse off because of it.

Wade Miller, executive director of the Center for Renewing America, called Abbott’s latest move a “giant headpat to his base, relabeling already failed policies.”

Abbott’s budget director, Sarah Hicks, confirmed his latest statement is not a change in tactics.

Texans have been sounding the alarm for over a year now regarding the devastation to property, livelihoods, and human life as Venezuela sends Texas their criminals and Texas spends billions on border security efforts that cannot stop the oncoming traffic.

Thus, securing the border and protecting Texans is one of eight GOP priorities chosen by thousands of grassroots delegates for the upcoming 2023 legislative session as Abbott refuses to actually declare an invasion.
