Can UT’s reputation survive serious allegations of corruption and malfeasance? Not as long as they go unanswered.
Tony McDonald and I are asking our fellow Longhorns to begin demanding public accountability.
[side_text]Call the Office of the Chancellor today and demand public accountability: 512-499-4201 [/side_text]By way of background, Tony – who serves as the Empower Texans general counsel – graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 with a B.A. in Economics and Government before graduating from the University of Texas School of Law in 2012. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012 with a B.B.A. in Management and a B.A. in Government.
Both of us have a vested interest in preserving our alma mater’s reputation as a “university of the first class.” That reputation is what ultimately led both of us to attend the 40 Acres.
Sadly, serious allegations have been made against UT-Austin that are causing damage to our university – ultimately devaluing the degrees we worked so hard to obtain – and the leaders sitting atop the Tower are refusing to answer them.
Longhorns like us – Longhorns everywhere – must protect UT. We need a strong UT, not one burdened by financial malfeasance and corruption.
Recently, four serious allegations have been made that:
- Unqualified students have been admitted to UT-Austin and the UT School of Law based on their relationships with powerful legislators
- Secret – and possibly illegal – payola schemes benefited favored faculty members
- UT has inflated or misreported monetary gifts
- UT has ignored the Texas Public Information Act by withholding information from regents and the public
The Chancellor and Regents have a responsibility to give us public answers and hold accountable those responsible. The failure – their refusal – to respond to these allegations is damaging the UT brand. Something students, parents, alumni and faculty work so hard to maintain.
We deserve answers.
