The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an election security measure that requires Americans to provide proof of citizenship for federal voter registration.

H.R. 8281, also known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, aims to keep noncitizens, including illegal aliens, from participating in federal elections. It also authorizes state election officials to accept a variety of documents to make it easier for citizens to register.

The SAVE Act passed the U.S. House Wednesday evening with 221 votes in favor of the bill and 198 against it.

The results show that 216 Republicans and five Democrats voted in favor of the bill, which was introduced by U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) in early May of this year.

The measure will now be sent to the Senate for a vote. If it passes both chambers of Congress, the SAVE Act will go to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

However, President Joe Biden has already voiced opposition to the bill, claiming that the legislation would do absolutely nothing to safeguard American election integrity.

“Radical progressive Democrats are engaged in a wholesale attack on citizenship and what it means to be an American. Through open borders, lawlessness, and attacks on this nation’s founding principles, the Left is ripping at the very fabric that holds this nation together,” Roy stated.

He continued, “We will only be able to keep this republic as a republic as long as our citizenship as Americans remains meaningful. That’s why I introduced the SAVE Act in the first place, and it’s why the People’s House passed it today.”

“Today’s passage is just the beginning, however. We must push forward, pressure the Senate, and keep up the fight for what makes this country great and what it means to be an American citizen,” Roy concluded.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson—who has repeatedly expressed strong support for the act—also published a statement on the outcome of the vote.

“Today, 198 House Democrats voted against preventing illegal aliens from voting in federal elections,” he posted on X. “Over the past four years, Joe Biden has welcomed millions upon millions of illegals into the country knowing that noncitizens only have to check a box to vote in a federal election.”

Johnson stated that, despite claims to the contrary, there has been an intentional effort to turn illegals into voters—and now Americans know the position of every member of the House of Representatives.

“House Republicans believe that only Americans should vote in American elections,” he continued. “House Democrats have now proven they believe that illegal aliens should vote in American elections.”
