Count U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz among the growing chorus of lawmakers calling for the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in the wake of the crisis at the southern border.

During an interview on Chris Salcedo’s The Salcedo Storm podcast, Cruz didn’t mince words when asked whether he would support Mayorkas’ impeachment.

“I believe the House should impeach Alejandro Mayorkas right now,” said Cruz. “Mayorkas is responsible for the utter chaos at our southern border, for the worst dereliction of duty of any cabinet secretary in history, and he is profoundly threatening the safety and security of 30 million Texans and of Americans across our country.”

After the Biden administration sued Texas over new buoy barriers placed in the Rio Grande that have slowed illegal crossings between ports of entry near Eagle Pass, Cruz said he stood against the lawsuit and blamed the president for the surge of illegal immigration over the past two years.

“Last year, more than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses because of Joe Biden and the Democrats’ open borders, and none of the Democrats care about any of that. What are they outraged about? ‘How dare Texas try to stop this invasion!’ It is disgraceful,” said Cruz.

“Instead of sending the politicized DOJ to try to stop Texas from defending our borders, the Department of Justice and the Biden administration ought to do their damn job: follow federal law and secure the border,” he added.

Cruz is not the only Texas official calling for Mayorkas to leave. Gov. Greg Abbott has made similar comments, saying, “He’s made the homeland more insecure than any Homeland Security secretary ever.”

U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R–TX) also blasted Mayorkas during a congressional committee hearing last week, accusing him of falsely claiming that DHS held operational control over the border.

While Texas’ buoy barrier and increased fencing have helped slow illegal crossings between ports of entry, border security advocates say there is more work to be done to secure Texas’ entire border.
