Avowed socialist and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has endorsed Deborah Peoples for mayor of Fort Worth.

“In Fort Worth on Saturday we can elect a true progressive for mayor,” the Democrat senator and presidential candidate said in a tweet on May 2.

The Sanders campaign also sent out emails to their supporters in Fort Worth linking them to the Texas Secretary of State website so they can confirm their voting location.

Peoples, as previously reported by Texas Scorecardhas served as chair of the Tarrant County Democratic Party and has admitted to attending meetings of the radical leftist group United Fort Worth.

Sanders’ endorsement and Peoples’ campaign are the latest moves by the Texas Democratic Party to gain control of local governments—with the overall objective of turning Texas blue in 2020.

Peoples is challenging incumbent Mayor of Fort Worth Betsy Price, as are James McBride and Mike Haynes, the latter being a write-in candidate.

Election Day is May 4.
