Early this morning, State Sen. John Carona released a statement via email in opposition to the impeachment proceedings of UT Regent Wallace Hall, a whistleblower who’s unearthed several alleged scandals:

I have been asked by a number of people in recent weeks my position on the possible impeachment of Wallace Hall as it relates to his service as a Regent of the University of Texas.  In my view, Wallace Hall should not be impeached.  Were I to have returned to the Senate in 2015, I would have voted against any resolution to do so. I’ve never met Mr. Hall, but feel that he was probably just doing his job as a regent.  If there is any fault in his actions, it may have been in his approach and handling of certain confidential data.  That said, it seems to me that impeachment is a leap too far.  As to the admissions process itself, it is clear that certain policy changes are in order.  —Senator John Carona”

Carona joins Governor Perry and former UT Regent, Charles Miller, as outspoken critics of the unwarranted witch-hunt against Hall.

It has been alleged that Carona’s own son may have been a beneficiary of a corrupt admission’s process that Hall’s efforts originally exposed, according to Watchdog.org.  But until a full investigation can examine all of the facts, the merits of those charges will remain circumstantial.

Shortly after Hall’s findings uncovered evidence in 2013, the Texas House Select Committee moved to impeach Hall.  Earlier this year, the committee voted affirmatively that there were grounds to do so, even after co-chair, Rep. Dan Flynn (R), admitted in writing that there were not.

Rep. Perry was the lone vote on the committee in opposition.

Most recently, Flynn unsuccessfully ran to the defense of UT President Bill Powers, desperately employing tactics in brash disregard of his legal authority. Powers will resign next year.

For months, establishment sympathizers in the media have soft-balled the issue, choosing to focus on the impeachment proceedings of Hall at the convenient dismissal of the alleged scandals he exposed.

Fortunately, alternative media outlets like the Wall Street Journal, Breitbart Texas and others have played a crucial role in preventing that from happening.  In fact, Watchdog.org conducted an independent investigation that confirmed concerns raised by Hall, linking legislators and Powers in an alleged clout abuse scheme that may have corrupted the University’s admissions’ process.

Now, the media’s focus is where it should have been all along; on the cover-up and their enablers such as David Dewhurst, Dan Branch, Jim Pitts and Speaker Joe Straus.

Texans should be troubled by any state official who, not only aids in a cover-up, but also those who sit idly by in omission and refuse to call for an independent investigation.

The House Select Committee is currently drafting articles of impeachment that, if passed out of committee, will be sent to the House for a vote.  If the House passes those articles, the Senate will commence a trial to determine whether or not Hall will be removed from office.
