A Comal Independent School District teacher was allowed to resign following allegations of misconduct with a former student.
Sarah Grudle was a dance coach at Canyon Lake High School for nearly seven years, starting in 2018.
The alleged misconduct occurred during the 2020-21 school year, according to a statement from the district’s Communications Department:
Campus administration received notice on Monday, May 19, that the teacher in question had engaged in inappropriate conduct with a former student during the 2020-21 school year. The teacher resigned after being notified of the allegations. The district has reported the incident to the Texas Education Agency, the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) and local law enforcement, who will conduct their own investigation into the matter.
Grudle is a former Canyon Lake student and was captain of the school’s dance team her senior year.
She holds a Texas teaching certificate in dance and physical education.
Grudle’s LinkedIn page shows she also works for a travel company coordinating group tours to Walt Disney World.
Hundreds of Texas school employees have been accused of sexual misconduct in just the past few years, including at least six state-certified Comal ISD educators:
— Canyon High School special education teacher Emily Anderson pleaded guilty in 2022 to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old male student in a classroom closet. Her teaching certificate was revoked, but not permanently.
— Canyon Lake High School math teacher Devon Hooper was arrested in 2022 for sending “inappropriate” photos and text messages to a 15-year-old male student. She was 38 at the time, married to another CLHS teacher, and had three children. Her husband filed for divorce and still works at the school.
— Canyon Lake High School counselor Shar Lynn McKelvie was reported to the TEA’s educator misconduct tracking system in 2023 for an alleged improper relationship with a student or minor (IRWSM). In 2024, she permanently surrendered her teaching certificate instead of disciplinary proceedings; however, she is not listed on the Do Not Hire Registry of people ineligible to work in a public school. Online records show McKelvie worked in Comal ISD from 2019 to 2023, but her LinkedIn page does not mention her work in any school districts.
— Canyon Lake High School girls’ soccer coach Orlando Naumann was arrested in 2023 for having an “improper relationship” with a 15-year-old student and possessing child pornography. He was arrested again in January on 18 new felony charges including online solicitation of a minor and possession with intent to promote child porn.
— In 2024, Canyon High School orchestra director Manuel Arambula permanently surrendered his teaching certificate in lieu of disciplinary proceedings and was added to the Do Not Hire Registry, after the TEA investigated a report of sexual misconduct in school—which includes accusations of sexual assault, continuous sex abuse of a young child, and indecency with a child.
— Davenport High School art teacher Jennifer Massey was arrested in 2024 for having sex with an underage male student.
Teaching certificates for Hooper, Naumann, and Massey are “under review” by the Texas Education Agency.
Thousands of cases of educator sexual misconduct have been reported to the state since the TEA began keeping organized records in 2021.
