Lubbock residents are mourning the loss of David Nelson, a local attorney, former Lubbock city councilman, and Republican nominee for Lubbock County Court at Law #3.
Nelson, 67, was biking Wednesday morning on FM 41 when investigators believe he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. According to a friend, he was training for a cycling race in Midland and had planned a 50-mile route that morning.
Nelson was a devoted member of the community according to reports, having volunteered for numerous local organizations. He was recognized most recently for winning the March 6 primary race for Lubbock County Court at Law #3, unseating Judge Phillip Hays, who was appointed to the position last fall. With no Democrat nominee to face in November, Nelson was the assumed successor for Hays. The county’s Republican Party Executive Committee will be tasked with choosing a nominee to place on November’s ballot (State Election Code, Chapter 145).
According to the Amarillo Pioneer, Lubbock Republicans released a statement saying, “Our deepest condolences go out to the Nelson family. David has gone home. Join me in prayer for the family as they navigate this shocking loss. David was on his way to serving this community as a judge and he will be surely missed.”
