A San Antonio-area teacher has been arrested and charged with an improper relationship with a student.

Jennifer Massey, 51, is an art teacher at Davenport High School in Comal Independent School District.

Around 6 p.m. on Thursday, police were called to a home under construction regarding a suspicious person. Deputies discovered Massey along with an underage boy. A preliminary investigation found that the two had engaged in sexual contact.

Massey was arrested and charged with an improper relationship between an educator and student, a second-degree felony with a punishment of up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Massey was booked into the Comal County Jail. She was released the following day on a $50,000 bond.

Davenport High School Principal Angela Looney told parents in a letter that Massey has been placed on administrative leave and will not return to campus.

“The safety and security of our students is one of our highest priorities and a responsibility that we take seriously,” wrote Looney. “During the hiring process, the district’s human resources department conducts full background checks and criminal history to ensure that classrooms are led by individuals who have every student’s best interest in mind.”

Comal ISD told to KENS 5, “The district does not condone inappropriate relationships between teachers and students. Ensuring the safety and security of our students is our top priority. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement during their investigation.”

According to state records, Massey’s teaching certificate is still valid but is currently under investigation by the Texas Education Agency’s Educator Investigations Division.

Last week, a teacher in San Antonio’s North East ISD was accused of sexually grooming a student via social media and arrested for online solicitation of a minor. Earlier this year, another North East ISD teacher was arrested for having an “improper” sexual relationship with a student.

Texas Scorecard has reported on dozens of Texas teachers charged with sex crimes involving students.
