A grand jury indicted a former San Antonio teacher on four felony counts of sexually abusing a child.
Paul Pearcy, 49, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony, and two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, a second-degree felony.
Pearcy taught math at MacArthur High School in the North East Independent School District from 2012 through June 2024, when he resigned for personal reasons, according to a district spokeswoman.
The alleged offenses occurred in February 2024 and are categorized in court documents as “family violence.”
A Bexar County grand jury handed down the indictments on August 27.
Pearcy was booked into the Bexar County Jail on August 30 and released the same day on bonds totaling $150,000.
As a condition of his bond, a judge placed Pearcy under full house arrest.
Pearcy has held a Texas teaching certificate for math since 2007. His certification includes a “Recognized” designation—a distinction “awarded to highly effective public school teachers,” according to the Texas Education Agency.
His certification is now under investigation by the TEA.
More Misconduct Complaints
Since 2021, sexual misconduct complaints have been filed against more than three dozen North East ISD teachers.
Data obtained from the TEA and posted online by the Open Records Project shows 35 North East ISD employees were reported to the agency for sexual misconduct from 2021 through August 2025.
Two more were reported in 2026: Christopher Wooten and David Terrazas, who both worked at LEE High School.
Several, including Wooten, were subsequently placed on the state’s Do Not Hire Registry.
Another was 26-year-old Zachary Rudolph Brune, a social studies teacher at the district’s MacUNITED high school campus.
District officials reported Brune to the TEA in May 2025 for an improper relationship with a student—a month after they met with Brune regarding his inappropriate communications with the girl. Brune resigned in lieu of nonrenewal, and “as a result” the district reported the misconduct to the TEA. Brune was added to the DNHR in February 2026.
Jae Casey Steuart, another now-former MacArthur teacher, was arrested and reported to the TEA for an improper student relationship in December 2022.
Steuart has been free on bond since her arrest and is facing a dozen felony sex crime charges involving an underage student. Her teaching certificate is under review but remained valid until it expired on August 31. She is not on the DNHR.
A new law (Senate Bill 571) that took effect in June 2025 added “inappropriate communication or boundary violations” as educator misconduct that must be reported to the state and requires educators arrested for certain serious crimes to have their teaching credentials suspended and be added to the Do Not Hire Registry until the criminal cases against them are resolved.
North East ISD is the lone Texas school district among 20 specifically targeted for extra scrutiny in the U.S. Department of Education’s nationwide crackdown on sexual abuse in schools, which threatens districts that protect predators over students with loss of federal funds.
In the past few years, hundreds of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children, and thousands have been reported to the TEA for sexual misconduct.
The TEA’s Educator Misconduct Reporting Dashboard shows the agency is currently investigating more than 2,700 sexual misconduct complaints and opening an average of 250 new cases a month.
