A South Texas teacher and coach in the Lyford Consolidated Independent School District was arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes involving a student.

Marcos Octavio Lugo, 29, is facing four felony charges: child grooming, indecency with child by sexual contact, improper relationship between educator and student, and possession of a controlled substance.

Lugo was reportedly booked into the Willacy County Jail on March 16. Bond was set at $150,000.

At the time of his arrest, Lugo was teaching biology at Lyford High School. He also coached boys’ sports.

A statement from Lyford CISD Superintendent Michelle DeWitt indicated that Lugo no longer works for the district.

DeWitt stated that she was “aware of the recent arrest of a former district employee for inappropriate conduct with a student” and that the allegations had been reported to appropriate authorities.

Online records show Lugo had worked for Lyford CISD since the 2020-21 school year.

Lyford is a D-rated district serving around 1,400 students.

Lugo received a Texas teaching certificate as an educational aide in 2020, but it expired in 2022.

He is listed as “under investigation” in the state’s Do Not Hire Registry.

In just the past few years, hundreds of Texas school employees have been accused of sex crimes involving students and other children, and thousands have been reported to the Texas Education Agency for sexual misconduct.
