A West Texas educator is on leave while authorities investigate allegations of misconduct involving a student.
Andrews Independent School District notified the community on April 21 that an unnamed employee had been placed on administrative leave after the district received concerns regarding inappropriate communication between the educator and a student.
“Upon review of the situation, the District determined that the employee’s actions do not align with the professional expectations of our District,” wrote Andrews ISD Superintendent Bobby Azam.
Azam emphasized that parents of the student involved had been notified directly regarding the situation.
“At this time we have not found any evidence of abuse or sexual misconduct; however, the misconduct in question does demand an investigation regarding District and State standards for professional educators,” he wrote.
Azam stated that “out of abundance of caution,” Andrews ISD placed the employee on leave and reported the allegations to the Texas Education Agency and the Andrews Police Department.
He added that the district cannot provide additional details due to personnel and student privacy issues, “unless and until final public sanctions are imposed by TEA.”
Andrews ISD is located northeast of Midland and has six schools serving about 4,200 students.
Two unnamed East Texas teachers were also recently placed under investigation for alleged misconduct involving students, in Anderson-Shiro ISD and Henderson ISD.
Over the past few years, a growing number of Texas school employees have been accused of sexual misconduct involving students and other children, and thousands have been reported to the Texas Education Agency.
