The league office announced that the Concordia Texas men’s golf team’s Ben Balen was named 2019 American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Balen helped lead the Tornados golf program to just their second-ever ASC Championship title and the fourth straight NCAA Division lll men’s golf championship appearance. 

He shot three rounds of even-par or better at the ASC Championship to win the individual medal, becoming just the third golfer in program history to reach that accomplishment.

Balen also recorded an 4.0 grade point average while earning ASC All-Academic honors as well. 

Since the inception of the award in 2007-08 academic year he becomes the 16th athlete in school history to earn the award.

The Distingushed Scholar-Athlete teams recognize student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. 

Sports information directors from the 13 ASC members institutions and two affiliate members are the selection committee.
