Dawson High School alum and Houston native Darrius Smith has coaches and sportswriters hopeful for his future as an Arizona Wildcat.

Now a sophomore running back, Smith is under the leadership of seven-season NFL veteran DeMarco Murray, the Wildcats’ running backs coach.

The sports blog Arizona Desert Swarm notes Smith is a backup, along with Gary Brightwell, Nathan Tilford and Michael Wiley. Smith is said to exhibit “some good running abilities that make you optimistic for his future.”

In high school, Smith holds records for “rushing touchdowns in a game, rushing yards in a game and points scored in a game,” according to his college bio. A three-year letter winner, Smith held the team captain role twice and found himself listed as an All District 23-6A choice and junior year district player of the year.

Smith is a pre-business major, and has two siblings. His parents are Darrilyn Bartlow and Darryl Smith.
