To say that quarterback D’Eriq King has the confidence of his University of Houston teammates would be an understatement.
“They need to take me out of the running and put D’Eriq King in it,” All-America defensive tackle Ed Oliver recently told the Houston Chronicle of Heisman Trophy consideration. “You see what he is doing.”
That comes as quite the endorsement of the Marvel High alum given that Oliver is widely considered to be one of the best players in college football.
Over their first six games, the Cougars (5-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) have averaged nearly 50 points with King throwing for 1,571 yards and 20 touchdowns against just three interceptions.
“We just need to keep doing what we do: scoring touchdowns and putting up points,” King said. “More reps, more games you get, naturally the more comfortable you get in the offense. I feel like I’m in a good place right now. I know everything that is going on.”
King recently hinted his expectations for himself and the Cougars has never been higher.
“I’m a very confident person,” he said. “I might not say a lot, but I’m pretty confident in myself. My expectation is to win every game, it doesn’t matter by a half-point or three touchdowns. Just win every game. Anybody that knows me, my teammates know I don’t care about (any of the stats). I just want to win.”
