Jayla Richard, a 5-foot-6 softball player from McKinney, Texas, is enjoying her first full year at Prairie View A&M University.

According to her bio on the PVAMU website, Richard fielded offers from Texas State, Arkansas and Central Arkansas, Lindenwood and Middle Tennessee State. She said she settled on PVAMU because several family members had attended the historically black college and “I was excited to continue the legacy.”

A fan of Cajun food and the Christian music group Hillsong United, Jay (as her friends call her) played 28 games in her first year at PVAMU. A standout performance occurred in games against Arkansas Pine Bluff, where she scored a run.

Richard credits her teammates and family as her biggest influences and excels at mathematics. For entertainment, she chooses HBO’s American Horror Story and the 2009 sci-fi film The Fourth Kind.
