In keeping with our effort to provide Texans with the information they need to be informed voters, Texas Scorecard made a questionnaire available to those running the State Republican Executive Committee. While we won’t be issuing an endorsement in any of these races, we hope that the responses to these questions will help you decide which man and which woman will best represent your interest on the SREC.
Here are the answers from the Senate District 2 candidates who responded:
Stephen Stanley
What are the qualities of a Texas Republican? Why are you one?
Stephen Stanley: Fairness, Independence, Self-Reliance, Constitutionalists, Honesty, Loves Texas and America! As a True Texas Republican born and raised here in Texas I am Independent and will fight for my rights and yours! As TEXANS believe in limited Government and Low TAXES!
Texas has a lot of elected Republican officials. Who do you believe does the best job standing up for the priorities of the Texas GOP? Why?
Stephen Stanley: Senator Hall! He is one of if not the most Conservative in the Texas Senate/Legislature and truly tries to follow the Legislative Priorities as outlined by the Delegates at the Biennial State GOP Convention and his Conservative core beliefs.
Some individuals say the current party platform is too long and should be shortened. Do you agree? If so, what portions of the platform would you advocate eliminating?
Stephen Stanley: Yes! We as the Texas GOP, need to combine/consolidate our State Platform. In my 22 years of going to the State Conventions and participating in the Party at different levels I don’t know what all of the planks are and I would guess that there are a handful in the State that do know at least 50% of them. It’s impossible to hold any Republican Candidate/officeholder accountable to the platform if we ourselves don’t truly know what’s in it? We must prioritize our platform so we can make our candidates and officeholders more accountable!
What must be done to ensure the Texas GOP’s legislative priorities are implemented by legislators?
Stephen Stanley: Emphasis and Accountability measures need to be placed on these priorities to force the Governor, Lt. Governor and the Speaker to have them placed in the appropriate committees at the beginning of each Session and some formal action be required in the first 45 days of any Session.
Why have you decided to run for the SREC?
Stephen Stanley: I have had the privilege to know and work with most in SD2 since John Cook brought me into the State Party Politics in 1998. A strong commitment of time and resources is needed to do the work necessary for the State GOP as well as Senate District 2. As a prior City Councilman in both Sachse and Garland I fully understand self-sacrifice and the level of commitment to serve those who have elected me.
