Once the lone conservative on the Austin City Council, local businesswoman Ellen Troxclair has officially announced that she is seeking the Texas state Senate seat for Senate District 24 on Wednesday.

She will be looking to replace State Sen. Dawn Buckingham (R–Lakeway), who formally announced her candidacy for Texas Land Commissioner on Monday and has served in the Texas Senate since 2017.

In her announcement, Troxclair said, “With the Biden Administration doing everything it can to force its radical leftist agenda through executive orders and acts of Congress, Texas needs proven, conservative fighters to hold the line at the state level.”

While serving on the Austin City Council, Troxclair advocated for property tax relief and the elimination of fees and mandates that made the city unaffordable for many of its citizens. Since leaving office, she was named a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, where she advocates for property tax reforms and sustainable relief from rising property taxes at the state level.

The field of candidates may continue to grow. The Texas deputy attorney general for legal strategy, Aaron Reitz, had also previously indicated he was considering running for the seat. Reitz was previously a candidate for the Republican nomination in House District 47 in 2020, but he failed to qualify for the primary runoff election.
