A new poll from the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs shows both former President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz are leading their Democrat opponents.

The poll—conducted from June 20 through July 1—surveyed more than 1,400 likely Texas voters. The poll has a 2.5 percent margin of error.

According to the survey, Trump is leading current President Joe Biden by nine points (49 percent to 40 percent). Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy garnered five percent, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein scrounged two percent. Four percent of respondents said they did not know or were unsure of who they would vote for.

Among likely voters, 94 percent of Trump supporters reported that they are certain they will be voting for Trump and 92 percent of Biden supporters said they will certainly vote for Biden.

Overall, 23 percent of voters said that the issue most influencing their presidential decision is immigration and border security. 15 percent raised concerns about soaring inflation and the economy, and 13 percent said the “Future of U.S. Democracy” was their highest priority.

The poll also asked likely voters about the U.S. Senate Race in which Cruz is running against Democrat Texas Congressman Colin Allred. Hobby’s poll revealed that Cruz has a three-point lead over Allred. The newest results show the gap closing from the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation’s poll in April which showed Cruz had a five-point lead to Allred.

Ninety-three percent of voters said they were certain about voting for Cruz and 92 percent said they were certainly voting for Allred. Cruz has a slight advantage among Independent voters—39 to 25 percent. Twenty-four percent of Independents said they are undecided about who to vote for.

Trump currently has a 50 percent favorability and a 49 percent unfavorability with Texas voters, whereas Biden has a 44 percent favorability to 55 percent unfavorability. Cruz has a 49 percent favorability to 48 percent unfavorability and Allred has a 46 percent favorability to 31 percent unfavorability.

Twenty-three percent of respondents said they don’t know enough about Allred to decide.

Election Day is November 5, 2024.
