The fight for meaningful property tax reform continues in the Texas Legislature as legislation is set to receive a committee hearing in the Texas House next week.

House Bill 2, like its companion Senate Bill 2, seeks to slow the growth of skyrocketing property taxes by implementing mandatory rollback elections, lowering the rollback rate to 2.5 percent, and other efforts designed to increase transparency for taxpayers.

Senate Bill 2 was passed out of committee and currently awaiting a vote on the floor of the Senate.

State Rep. Dustin Burrows (R–Lubbock), the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and the author of the bill, has set the hearing for House Bill 2 for Wednesday, February 27 at 8 a.m.

Much like the recent committee hearing in the Senate, taxpayer-funded lobbyists and local officials are expected to come to Austin and oppose the legislation en masse. Notably, legislation to end taxpayer-funded lobbying will be heard simultaneously in the House State Affairs Committee.

Taxpayers who want to make their voices heard will have the opportunity to offer public testimony.
