Republican U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz has retained her seat in Texas’ 15th congressional district, defeating Democrat Michelle Vallejo.

De La Cruz became the first Republican to ever represent the district in 2022 when she first went up against Vallejo. Democrats had controlled the district for decades. The district consists of Hidalgo County deep in South Texas all the way to Guadalupe County and has a more than 80 percent Hispanic population.

During her 2022 bid, Vallejo openly supported the Medicare for All system spearheaded by socialist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

In this year’s October debate, Vallejo gave a shaky response to whether she would support a Medicare for All plan, which De La Cruz used to attack Vallejo.

De La Cruz’s freshman term is characterized by her legislation targeting fentanyl trafficking, which was passed and signed into law. She also created the South Texas Water Working Group, a collaborative effort to address water challenges in South Texas.
