School choice advocates were dealt a major blow during the Texas House’s debate on the biennial budget on Thursday.
A legislative priority of the Republican Party of Texas, school choice would allow parents to move their children out of public schools with the help of scholarships or tax credits.
Democrat State Rep. Abel Herrero (Robstown) offered an amendment that would stipulate that money appropriated in the budget “may not be used to pay for or support a school voucher, education savings account, or tax credit scholarship program or a similar program through which a child may use state money for nonpublic primary or secondary education.”
Members of the House approved the amendment 115-29.
