Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he has a beef with the New York Strip.

In an X post on Friday, Patrick announced he is cooking up a new initiative to rename the popular steak to the “Texas Strip,” arguing that Texas, not New York, deserves recognition for its beef industry.

Patrick announced the initiative after meeting with the Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers associations this week.

Because Texas is home to approximately 12.2 million head of cattle—the most in the nation—Patrick questioned why a cut of beef from Texas cattle should carry the name of a state primarily known for dairy cows.

“Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn’t mean we need to keep doing that,” Patrick stated.

Patrick says the Texas Senate plans to file a concurrent resolution formally changing the name in Texas and encouraging restaurants and grocery stores to update their menus and labels accordingly. He says he hopes the name will catch on nationwide and even globally, further cementing Texas’ reputation in the cattle industry.

“Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers. We promote the Texas brand on everything made or grown in Texas because it benefits our economy and jobs,” Patrick said.

“In a world filled with serious issues that we address every day at the Texas Capitol, this simple resolution will help better market Texas beef. That’s good for the Texas cattle industry. The Cattle Associations sure liked the idea.”

The resolution follows a similar branding push by former President Donald Trump, who recently signed an executive order changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

Patrick, a strong Trump ally, said he “might take a short cruise across the Gulf of America and have a juicy medium-rare Texas Strip.”
