President Trump announced earlier this month that he intended to deploy National Guard soldiers to America’s southern border.

The decision comes in the wake of Congress’ inability to pass a budget that allots the proper funding to secure the southern border, and more particularly to get the wall President Trump has promised to build.

Trump’s decision is not a radical break from either President Bush or President Obama. Both Presidents deployed troops to the Mexico-America border for the same reasons. At the state level, both former Governor Rick Perry and current Governor Greg Abbott have deployed units from the State Guard to the Mexican border.

The announcement was made after thes news that over a thousand refugees, largely Honduran, were caravaning to America. Trump has threatened to pull out of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and to also pull Federal Aid from several Latin American countries should the caravan make it to the United States. As of now, the caravan has been stopped in southern Mexico.

Until Congress takes action to secure our nation’s border and protect our country, both President Trump and Governor Abbott should continue to secure it with American military forces.
