Where does Ken Sapp stand on the Speaker’s race for the 83rd Session? Voters asked him this question at a recent candidate forum for HD 91’s runoff election. Unfortunately for Sapp, his refusal to answer didn’t play well with them.

If the vote for speaker were held today, whom would Mr. Sapp support? That’s what voters in HD 91 wanted to know, but Sapp didn’t seem to have an answer.

I don’t know who’s running… Who is his opponent? I’ll tell you this… if he’s the only person that’s a candidate for speaker… the gamesmanship that’s happening on this topic is absolutely amazing.”

“Gamesmanship” is an interesting choice of words to describe the grassroots opposition to Joe Straus’ speakership. Apparently Sapp must not have been paying attention on election night when Texas voters repudiated Straus and his leadership team, including replacing Tarrant County Rep. Vicki Truitt with a conservative leader, Giovanni Capriglione, and Straus lackey Barbara Nash with stalwart Matt Krause.

Ken Sapp refusing to say how he’ll vote for speaker.

Why won’t Sapp tell voters if he is or is not opposed to Speaker Straus? Maybe it has something to do with his campaign donations from lobbyists and PACs out-of-district.

This isn’t the only position Sapp refuses to affirm his stance on either. He has not signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

Given his history of opposing a property tax relief effort for senior citizens in North Richland Hills, and his push for gas tax hikes, one can understand why.

Sapp is actually doing voters a service by showing his refusal to take hard stands. With early voting starting today, undecided voters have a chance to see the type of leader he will (or won’t) be in Austin.

Voters instead should look at Stephanie Klick if they want a principled conservative serving in office from HD 91.

Early voting runs through Friday, July 27th. The Runoff takes place July 31st.

UPDATE: Wonder how Stephanie Klick would vote on the speaker’s race? She didn’t leave much room for doubt with her answer.
