Regents of the Texas A&M System are set to approve provost appointments at multiple campuses for individuals with histories of left-wing pseudo-scholarship.
According to the consent agenda for this Thursday’s quarterly meeting, regents will approve the appointment of Dr. Michael Johnson as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the system’s College Station campus and Dr. Aimee Shouse as Associate Provost of Curriculum and Academic Quality at the system’s Victoria campus.
Consent agendas are intended to enable governmental bodies to quickly move through unobjectionable items but are frequently abused to hide controversial measures.
Johnson, currently the associate provost for academic enhancement, has held a series of positions in Aggieland across two decades.
From 2020 to 2022, he worked as an “Associate Dean for Inclusion and Faculty Success” in the College of Engineering.
In 2022, Johnson published an article titled “Lessons learned: faculty watch parties are a powerful approach to foster diversity and inclusivity discussions.” According to this paper’s description, “social and climate factors often send subtle (and not-so subtle) cues to women about whether or not they belong” in professional settings.
“Unfortunately, women often experience aggressions, both at the micro and macro level,” the description continues. “[I]t is imperative that people be made aware of the lived experiences of women and women of color in STEM fields and have opportunities to reflect on the systems and climates that need to be drastically overhauled.”
In 2021, Johnson published “Advocacy and Allyship by Men for Women in Engineering-related Fields at the College Level,” which is described as follows:
Diversity enables better and more creative problem solving, with greater financial impact on organizations, according to multiple studies in the past 10 years. One long-standing limitation on diversity in the engineering, computing, and technology fields is the persistently-low representation of women….Most succinctly, more men need to directly involve themselves as advocates for and allies of women. This panel engages with professionals of both binary gender identities who currently ally and advocate for women in engineering, computing, and technology fields.
Shouse has similarly worked in a series of positions across academia since the early 1990s.
From 2008 to 2016, she was the chair of the Department of Women’s Studies at Western Illinois University.
Her academic CV touts “Thirty-three years of progressive faculty and administrative experience.”
Under a state law passed in 2025, “provost-level” hires require approval from the Board of Regents.
The Texas A&M System consists of twelve academic institutions, including the College Station and Victoria campuses, and eight state agencies. The A&M System is overseen by a Board of Regents appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate. Robert Albritton of Fort Worth is the current board chair.
