U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz joined in a letter questioning U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland about the Biden administration’s dismissal of more than 350,000 illegal alien removal cases.
According to a press release Monday, the letter, signed by 20 other senators, stated that the Biden administration has “consistently downplayed” the border crisis and its “repeated failures” in addressing the border have created a “backlog of 3.5 million asylum cases” and increased risks of illegal alien crime.
“The American people deserve transparency and accountability regarding the administration’s handling of immigration and border security,” the senators wrote in the letter. “The current state of affairs at our southern border is unacceptable and demands immediate and effective solutions.”
The senators’ letter cited a recent article by the New York Post, which referred to the Biden administration’s dismissal of asylum cases as “mass amnesty.” The article stated that since 2022, immigration officials have dropped over 350,000 asylum claims by illegal aliens who were not seen as a threat to the United States. With their cases dropped, the illegal aliens would have the ability to remain in the country without being deported.
According to the letter, this is a “stark contrast” to the Trump administration, whose number of case dismissals “barely surpassed 26,000 over the entirety of his four years in office.” In the letter, data reveals that under President Biden, “102,550 cases were dismissed in 2022, followed by 149,000 in 2023, and 113,843 cases in just the first four months of 2024.”
Senators wrote that the move “undermines the integrity” of the immigration system and called it an “affront to every person pursuing a legal path to the United States.”
In a post on X, Cruz spoke of Rachel Morin, a mother of five in Maryland who was reportedly killed in 2023 by a gang member from El Salvador who had entered the U.S. illegally, and the danger that mass amnesty for illegal aliens poses to communities.
“As Americans like Rachel Morin are being killed by the illegal alien crime wave, Biden decided to roll out a mass amnesty program,” he said on Tuesday. “This program would grant citizenship to an entire class of illegal aliens and allow them to vote. Heck no!!”
One co-signer, Florida U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, cited a Fox News article on Tuesday, reporting that the number of “non-detained” illegal alien cases on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) docket has skyrocketed to over 7 million in 2024.
“Another reminder the Biden Administration isn’t serious about closing America’s border to illegal migrants, terrorists, or cartels,” Rubio said.
In early June, President Biden issued an executive order that claimed to address the border crisis. However, Gov. Greg Abbott described the measure as an effort to raise Biden’s polling numbers ahead of the general election.
Meanwhile, Texas has taken steps to strengthen its border, including deploying the Texas National Guard and installing razor wire due to the federal government’s lack of border enforcement laws.
