Gov. Greg Abbott is continuing his escalating actions against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), formally requesting that U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent begin the process to revoke the organization’s tax-exempt nonprofit status.

In the letter, Abbott noted that “Federal investigators and court fillings identify CAIR as a direct subsidiary of the Muslim Brotherhood and as a ‘front group’ for Hamas in the United States.”

“Accordingly, I respectfully request that you investigate CAIR for suspension of its tax-exempt status. Americans have generous hearts, and federal law wisely creates incentives to donate to nonprofit organizations that promote the public good. But charity must not become a backdoor to sponsor terrorism, endanger Americans, and subvert our democracy,” he continued.

The request marks the latest in a series of actions Abbott has taken against CAIR in recent weeks, including designating CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations” under Texas law, ordering the Department of Public Safety to conduct criminal investigations, and calling for probes into alleged Sharia-based tribunals operating in North Texas.

CAIR has already sued Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton in federal court over the terrorist designation and enforcement measures, claiming political targeting and constitutional violations.

In response, CAIR issued a sharply worded statement, saying it “feels sorry for Greg Abbott,” calling his proclamation “unconstitutional,” and labeling him “an Israel First politician” who is “obsessed with CAIR because our lawsuits have defeated his attempts to silence Texans critical of Israel three different times.”
