Texas Tech University System Chancellor Brandon Creighton has issued a policy memorandum prohibiting the advocacy of “race or sex-based prejudice” in course content within the system’s component institutions.

The memo, which was issued to the system’s five campus presidents, is designed to ensure “that classroom instruction fully complies with state and federal law, Board of Regents policy, and Chancellor directives.”

The memo defines this content to include inculcating the belief that:

  • One race or sex is inherently superior to another;
  • An individual, by virtue of race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, consciously or unconsciously;
  • Any person should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment because of race or sex;
  • Moral character or worth is determined by race or sex;
  • Individuals bear responsibility or guilt for actions of others of the same race or sex,
  • Meritocracy or a strong work ethic are racist, sexist, or constructs of oppression.

Creighton’s memo also outlines a course content review process with various responsibilities assigned to professors, department chairs, deans, and provost offices.

The memo warns faculty that non-compliance with the review process can result in disciplinary action.

Creighton’s memo follows recent moves by Texas State University to establish standards to replace this sort of advocacy with “value neutral instruction.”

Texas A&M regents recently banned advocacy of “gender ideology” and “race ideology.” Texas Tech’s new policy contrasts with TAMU’s policy by restricting “prejudice,” a narrower term than “ideology.’”

The Texas Tech University system is the parent organization of five institutions, including the main campus in Lubbock. It is overseen by a board of regents that is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate. Cody Campbell is the current board chairman.
