Kordell David of East Chambers High School always seems to have a crowd of fans and supporters on his side.
“Kordell is as solid as they come and he’s got people pulling for him,” East Chambers High Coach Russ Sutherland told Empower Texans of his four year starting wide receiver and strong safety. “Everyone loves him. He’s a level-headed young man and that has allowed him to excel in difficult situations, like bouncing around from home to home. He’s an example to other guys of how to do things the right way.”
With 13 catches for 328 yards and five touchdowns, David has been at the heart of the Buccaneers 4-1 start.
“He’s a tremendous talent with next level ability,” Sutherland added. “He’s got God-given ability and he works hard enough that it makes him special. In my 28 years of coaching, he’s one of the guys I’ve enjoyed most and he’s the most talented receiver I’ve ever had.”
Sutherland said others are starting to take notice, with several colleges calling to inquire about David and more area coaches raving about his play.
“Woodville is one of the top-ranked programs in the state, and after our game, their coach talked about how someone should be paying for him to go to school,” he added.
David, who also stars on the basketball team and runs track, takes it all in stride.
“He’s not a rah-rah guy, but he leads by example by always doing what he’s supposed to do,” Sutherland said. “It’s a testament to the type of young man he is, that he’s been able to hold himself together and continue to excel the way he has. He’s just one of those guys you don’t mind going the extra mile for.”
