Former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman Prepares Run for Attorney General

The Republican primary field for Attorney General in Texas is continuing to grow.

Friday, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman filed an official campaign treasurer appointment form with the Texas Ethics Commission indicating she is a candidate for Texas Attorney General.

She joins the current Attorney General Ken Paxton and current Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who announced his candidacy back on June 2, in the race. A growing Republican primary field for the seat might spell trouble for Paxton and likely fracture support between grassroots and more establishment Republicans throughout the course of the next year leading up to the already likely delayed primary elections.

Guzman abruptly announced her resignation from the Texas Supreme Court last week. She was first appointed to the court in 2009 by then-Governor Rick Perry (R). Though Texas Supreme Court Justices are elected statewide, because she resigned in the midst of her term, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will likely appoint her successor in the next few weeks.
