Over 100 Republican county chairs have now signed a letter declaring their full support for State Rep. David Cook as speaker of the House.

As previously reported by Texas Scorecard, the letter campaign, led by Tarrant County GOP Chairman Bo French, emphasizes accountability for any Republican representatives who refuse to unite behind Cook (R-Mansfield).

In the days since the campaign began, the number of supporters has surged, surpassing 100 as of Thursday morning.

“As leaders of the Republican Party in our counties, we write to remind you of the trust that voters have placed in our party and the responsibility you bear as their elected representatives,” the letter states. “This weekend, the Texas House Republican Caucus nominated State Representative David Cook as its candidate for Speaker of the House. David Cook is a proven conservative who is committed to the Texas GOP legislative priorities and platform and to ending the long-standing practice of empowering Democrats with committee chairmanships.”

The letter goes on to criticize those who have broken ranks with the caucus: “Unfortunately, a small group of Republicans chose to abandon the caucus process and, in doing so, the will of the Republican majority. Led by Dustin Burrows, these representatives are now negotiating with Democrats to install a Speaker who would undermine the conservative agenda. This is an unacceptable betrayal of our party and our values.”

So far, only the Lubbock County GOP, where Burrows hails from, has endorsed his speaker bid—despite his overtures to Democrats.

Statewide leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton, have all endorsed the Republican caucus nomination process that selected Cook.
