The Texas Senate is continuing to make it clear that passing property tax reform and relief will be a legislative priority as the legislative session begins to start.
When the Senate met on Wednesday, they passed a short resolution to adopt rules for the 86th legislative session, which began yesterday.
Though the rules passed are almost identical to those adopted during the previous session, some changes to the Senate committees have created a new Senate Committee on Property Tax.
Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and newly elected House Speaker Dennis Bonnen have all emphasized the importance of property tax reform and relief going into the session, tying the issue to school finance reform.
Though no chair or members of the committee have been announced yet, many expect Patrick to release committee assignments within the next week.
During the interim, Patrick appointed a Select Committee on Property Tax Reform which held hearings around the state.
The new rules also created a separate Committee on Water and Rural Affairs and Committee on Agriculture, two committees that were previously joined.
