On Tuesday night, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz won his race against Democrat challenger Colin Allred.
Texans voted to re-elect Cruz to the U.S. Senate—where he has served since 2013—for the third time. In 2018, Cruz beat Democrat challenger Robert “Beto” O’Rourke for the seat.
Allred has served as Texas Congressional District 32’s representative since 2019 and has come under fire for his liberal record throughout the campaign. He has been criticized for voting against a resolution condemning federal Environmental Protection Agency mandates related to increased “emission standards” and missing a vote on U.S. border security legislation after voting to send money to Ukraine.
Recently, the Cruz campaign highlighted Allred’s claims that he opposes men competing in women’s sports. Last year, he voted against the Protection of Women and Girls Sports Act—which aimed to prohibit school athletic programs from allowing biological men to be pitted against women in female sports. He also voted in favor of a measure that would allow boys identifying as girls to use female-only facilities.
Additionally, an unearthed letter from 2022 showed Allred affirming his support for the “transgender community’s participation in sports.” Allred cited his support and co-sponsorship of the Equality Act, which would allow a person to play a sport or enter a locker room based on their “gender identity.”
Cruz will now continue his tenure in the U.S. Senate for his third consecutive term.
